Trade unions and the ballot process FAQs

Click on the frequently asked question to reveal our answer.

How have the trade unions been involved in the process?

In a process called collective bargaining, and in accordance with a recognition agreement between ourselves and our recognised trade unions UNISON and GMB, the proposed new pay structure and terms and conditions have been discussed and negotiated on behalf of the entire workforce. The trade unions have agreed to proceed to ballot their members on our proposed offer.

Pay and Reward affects everyone - will only union members be balloted? Or will all colleagues get a chance to vote?

The trade unions act on behalf of the whole workforce in the process of collective bargaining, regardless of whether you're a trade union member or not. Therefore, only members of UNISON or GMB unions are able to vote in the Pay and Reward ballot.

If I join the union now, will I be eligible to vote in the ballot?

Yes. If you want to vote in the ballot you need to join before the ballot starts. Contact our Trade Union colleagues directly for details of membership subscription options and fees.

You can contact Andy Geeves at the GMB trade union at  andy.geeves@bcpcouncil.gov.uk or 01202 123 212

You can contact Jon Hartley at UNISON trade union at  unison@bcpcouncil.gov.uk or 0800 0857 857

What happens if the outcome of the ballot is to reject the proposed new pay structure and terms and conditions? What would happen next?

In the event of a negative ballot outcome (or a 'no' vote), further discussions will be held with the trade unions to understand why members voted against the offer.  This would significantly delay the timeline for implementing Pay and Reward and equal pay. Doing nothing is not an option as we have a legal duty to address equal pay issues. Dismissal and re-engagement will only be considered as a last resort only.

How many colleagues are members of the trade unions?

We are not advised of colleague's trade union membership, so are unable to provide this information.
